Removing and Re-Placing Holds on Similar Items
From MPLICWIKI
[edit]
Introduction
- Holds are placed on one record. A copy-level hold applies to a specific item within a record. A title-level hold applies to any item within a record.
- Items with the same title but published in a different year or by a different publisher require a separate record.
- If all items of a record are Missing, Assumed Lost, or otherwise non-circulating, then the hold will remain attached to that record until the hold expires after a year or until an item is found and satisfies the hold.
- However, if you have an available copy attached to a record that is VERY similar to the record with no circulating copies, you may want to make the decision for the customer to remove the hold from the record with no circulating copies and re-place the hold on the record with an available copy.

Removing the Hold
- You will generally come across this while searching for an item on a pick list.
- Using the Item ID listed on the Pick List, use Check Item Status to determine the User ID and Pick-Up Location. Write these down.
- Use Hold - Remove Item to remove the customer's hold. (See Removing User and Item Holds for further information).

Re-Placing the Hold
- If the item is in your hand, use Hold - Place to place a COPY-level hold (since it is in your hand) using the customer's User ID and desired pick-up location. Then trap and process. (See Placing/Trapping Holds/Routing Items Available at Your Location for further information).
- If the item is not in your hand, then use Hold-Place to place a TITLE-level hold using the customer's User ID and desired pick-up location. The hold will appear on the next pick list of an owning agency with an available copy, or the hold will be satisfied when a copy is discharged. (See Placing Hold for Checked Out Items or for Items Available at Another Location for more information).
